Old garage doors often have seals that start to deteriorate over time. Once the seals are old and dried out, air can get in and out around the door frames. If your garage is heated and air conditioned, this can affect the energy bill for your home. Have a technician inspect the door and seals to determine if they can be repaired or if the door needs updating. A replacement garage door is not cheap, but if it saves you money in the long run, it might be work spending the money to replace.

Updated Door Style

The look of your home from the street is important. If the door on your garage is old, has dents and dings in it, or just looks out of place for your home, you might want to replace it simply to update the look of the home. The garage door may not be terribly old, but if you change the look of the home, the garage should probably match the house. New windows, doors, and paint can make the house look great, but don't forget to include the garage in the rehab so it doesn't bring down the look of the home.

There are some parts of the installation that require the installer to use special tools and have a good working knowledge of how the door works. Often, adjustments are required when the door is installed so that it works properly.  Most door companies will offer installation when you buy a new door, so ask them about installation options when you start shopping for your new door.
