Garage Door Maintenance Tips You Should Know

Garage doors are relatively expensive, and you wouldn't want to replace yours prematurely. That said, you must figure out a way to keep your garage door in good condition. That's only possible if you invest in preventative garage door maintenance. Here are the tips you can employ to keep your residential garage door in fantastic condition.

Tighten the Hardware

Garage doors have many parts that are held together by fasteners and brackets. Unfortunately, this hardware gets loose with time. Closing and opening the door frequently is the main reason for the hardware loosening up. Unfortunately, loose hardware will make your door noisy and ineffective. That's the reason you should tighten the hardware every few months. Doing so will prevent common garage door problems.

Lubricate the Moving Parts

When was the last time you applied lubricant on your garage door? It may have been years. Well, most folks forget about their garage doors after the installation is done. Sadly, failure to lubricate the moving parts can cause them to wear out pretty fast. That said, you should strive to lubricate the tracks, springs, bearing plates, and rollers. You can lubricate these parts at least twice yearly.

Invest in Annual Tune-Ups

Garage doors must be serviced to keep them working effectively. Surprisingly, most garage doors malfunction due to the lack of maintenance. So, annual tune-ups are vital if you want your garage door to serve you longer. During these tune-ups, the technician will lubricate any squeaking parks, repair broken parts, and replace worn-out components. The annual tune-ups will keep your garage door working great for years to come.

Ensure Your Door's Weatherstripping Is Great

Garage doors have weatherstripping at the bottom and along the sides to keep dust, water, and dirt away. Unfortunately, the weatherstripping can't last for years due to harsh weather. You must keep checking whether the rubber weatherstripping is in good condition. If not, you might have to replace it or repair it. You can also reattach loose spots if you find any.

Clean the Door Tracks

Your door tracks must be clean to facilitate smooth opening and closing. Sadly, most people neglect their tracks and don't bother to check if there are any obstructions. The tracks can trap debris, dirt, and leaves that could interfere with the door's operation. While you're at it, check for cracks in the tracks. The presence of cracks indicates that you need new tracks.

Other tips include cleaning the door often, looking for rusty spots and repainting them, and inspecting the cables and pulley often.
